Is Little Britain, Ontario a Good Place to Live?

If you’re just passing through, Little Britain might look like a small community with only a handful of farms, but it’s really much more than that! We’ll go as far as to say that it’s one of the best hidden gems in Durham Region and Kawartha Lakes (if not all of Ontario).

If you’re on the hunt for a quaint community that’s full of life and right in the heart of an incredible outdoor paradise, you’re going to want to get acquainted with Little Britain.

Where is Little Britain, Ontario?

Little Britain is tucked away in the southwestern part of the City of Kawartha Lakes. It’s just north of Lake Scugog, about 45 minutes due west of Peterborough by car or about 90 minutes northeast from central Toronto. That said, Little Britain is also quite spread out, on the map it covers most of the K0M 2C0 postal code. With that in mind, it’s not as dense (at least by small town and country standards of density) as some of the other communities in Durham Region and Kawartha Lakes.

Life on the Lake

Like a handful of other communities in Durham Region and Kawartha Lakes, Little Britain embraces waterfront living. In fact, the southern border of the community is actually made up of the northern shore of Lake Scugog. With that in mind, a lot of Little Britain residents live in waterfront homes. It’s not just Lake Scugog either. Zooming out, there are more than 250 lakes and rivers throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes. So, however you like to enjoy the water, be it swimming, boating, fishing, canoeing, all of the above, or something else, Little Britain, and the City of Kawartha Lakes is your playground.

Little Britain may be small in size, but its sense of community is just as strong as any neighbourhood you’d find in a big city. One of the best ways to experience the connectivity and local pride of Little Britain is during festival season!

There are a number of unique, fun-packed events and festivities in and around Little Britain that bring neighbours together and shine a spotlight on the local culture. Some of our favourites include:

  • Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival
  • Mariposa Folk Festival
  • Kawartha Arts Festival
  • Kirkfield Festival
  • Lindsay Exhibition

Who Thrives in Little Britain?

Little Britain is a small community, however, it’s home to all kinds of people. As a place with lots to offer, homebuyers from most walks of life can thrive there – including those who are new to country living. Let’s get to know your future neighbours.

Little Britain has a lot to offer families. From plenty of space to play and get fresh air to a safe and quiet community feel, and access to some of Kawartha Lakes’ top schools, it’s not hard to see why parents and kids love it here.

It’s also home to a handful of retirees and empty nesters. Little Britain’s charming ambiance and affordable housing make it a first choice for buyers who want to enjoy their golden years in the country.

We’ve also seen a big uptick in remote workers flocking to Little Britain in recent years, thanks to the increasing popularity of the work-from-home model. Plus, Little Britain’s natural surroundings make for the perfect way to disconnect after a long day of work.

Are You Ready For Rural Life?

Little Britain is a great place to live. Despite being nice and quiet, it’s also not so secluded that you’re totally cut off from the surrounding communities and the Greater Toronto Area.

That said, if you’re coming from a larger city like Toronto or even Oshawa, adjusting to the local pace might take some time – and that’s okay! However, if you are in this boat, it’s still important to think hard about whether you’re really ready to make the jump to country living.

In a rural area, you’ll be much more secluded compared to living in a city or larger town. While this is a major draw for many incoming homebuyers, it’s not without its special considerations. Of course, Little Britain isn’t totally isolated – and it’s still just an hour and a half from Toronto, but it’s still a completely different lifestyle from the city.

For example, if you’re a big fan of having amenities like grocery stores, healthcare, shopping, and other essential services within walking distance or even a short drive, moving to the country might take some getting used to.

If You Like Little Britain, You Also Love…

As lifelong locals of Durham Region and Kawartha Lakes, we love Little Britain – and we think you will too! That said, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention some nearby communities that cater to the same types of buyers who are interested in Little Britain.

Our neck of the woods is home to a number of incredible towns and communities that each have something special to offer. So we’d like to take a moment to shout out some other places that should be on your radar if you’re considering a move to Durham Region or Kawartha Lakes.

Blackstock

On the other side of Lake Scugog, you’ll find Blackstock. It’s a small, relatively quaint community that’s home to a little bit more than 700 people. Like Little Britain, it has a friendly atmosphere and a diverse mix of locals including young families, farmers, and even some retirees too. Blackstock also has a penchant for festivals and local events. If you get the chance, the Blackstock Fair and Demolition Derby are both worth checking out.

Port Perry

Port Perry itself is just shy of 10,000 residents, however, it’s part of a larger close-knit community within the Lake Scugog basin. For many residents, it’s a happy medium of down-to-earth country life and the type of conveniences you might expect from a larger suburb.

You might really love Port Perry if you’re on the hunt for a smaller town that makes it extra easy to get to and from Toronto. Port Perry’s unique location makes for an easy commute into the city as it’s only about an hour’s drive from central Toronto and just 15 minutes from Oshawa and Whitby. Port Perry is also served by public transit which is super unique for a community of its size! Durham Region Transit (or DRT for short) provides regular bus service from Port Perry across various parts of the Durham Region including Oshawa and Whitby where you can get to downtown Toronto in less than an hour on the train.

Northumberland County

South of Lake Scugog, towards the eastern edge of Durham Region, is Northumberland County. Rather than being one individual community, the County is actually home to a handful of charming hamlets, villages, and towns such as Cobourg, Brighton, and Campbellford which are known for being down-to-earth, welcoming, and a little bit rustic.

Similar to Little Britain, Northumberland County is a paradise for outdoor recreation enthusiasts, especially those who love the water. Tucked up to the shores of Lake Ontario, this area is home to over 350 more lakes and rivers. On the real estate side of things, you’ll find secluded farm lots, waterfront cottages, and other country properties – much like Little Britain.

If you’re looking for a community with a distinct country feel that’s not quite as small as Little Britain, consider exploring Northumberland County.
