The Kawartha Lakes area is known for all kinds of things – scenic hiking, blue lakes, quaint cottages, and all kinds of ways to enjoy the great outdoors. However, one thing it’s not known for is hustle and bustle.
So, if you’ve ever heard the region referred to as “The City of Kawartha Lakes” it’s totally understandable why you may be confused. Here’s the thing – on paper, Kawartha Lakes is a city.
However, rather than what most people imagine when they think of a city, Kawartha Lakes is more like a big web of different communities that all share the same local government. This is a big perk for residents, who get to enjoy the quaint and unique ambience of their community without losing out on the amenities, services, convenience, and interconnectivity that a small to midsize city can offer.
As long-serving real estate agents in Durham Region and Kawartha Lakes, we know this unique city and its communities inside and out. If you’re new to the area or are considering moving to Kawartha Lakes, this blog is for you!
Rural Living in the City
A city that’s made up of small towns, villages, and farms may sound contradictory – or even a bit silly. However, that’s what you’ll find in Kawartha Lakes.
Altogether, the City of Kawartha Lakes is home to about 80,000 people. That’s about the same size as Peterborough or Belleville. However, it certainly doesn’t feel that way. This is because rather than living in one central area, Kawartha Lakes locals are spread out across more than 20 different towns and villages. So whether you’re exploring one of its communities or moving in, you’ll feel the small-town, rural vibe.

Towns & Communities of Kawartha Lakes
Let’s get to know some of the communities and towns that are part of Kawartha Lakes.
Lindsay, Ontario
As far as population goes, Lindsay is the largest town in Kawartha Lakes – home to almost 25,000 people. Like other parts of Kawartha Lakes, it’s growing steadily as more buyers discover how special the local lifestyle is.
Nestled along the picturesque Scugog River, right between Sturgeon Lake and Lake Scugog, Lindsay is known for its lakeside lifestyle. Not a fan of swimming, boating, or fishing? That’s ok. There’s lots going on in town too!
Downtown Lindsay features charming cafes and restaurants, independent shops, entertainment venues, and even a couple of art galleries. This splash of culture gives the town a little bit of urban flair without straying too far from its rural roots.

Bobcaygeon, Ontario
After Lindsay the next largest community in Kawartha Lakes is Bobcaygeon. Just shy of 4,000 residents, Bobcaygeon also sits right in the middle of two lakes.
Bobcaygeon also has a lively downtown area, with shops, restaurants, and countless local events happening throughout the year. It’s vibrant, charming, and just steps away from the town’s famous sandy beach.
On top of being a great place to live, Bobcaygeon is also a tourist hotspot. The town’s quaint atmosphere and scenic lock system draw in daytrippers, campers, and getaway seekers from across Canada and the US.
Fenelon Falls, Ontario
Fenelon Falls is another Kawartha Lakes gem. Like Bobcaygeon, it’s a scenic little town known for its lakeside lifestyle, local mom-and-pop businesses, tourist attractions, and nearby cottage communities. Population-wise, it’s on the smaller side (depending on what you consider small), home to roughly 2,000 people.
